Dads is funny. There I said it. This show has wonderful potential. We live in a down economy so we are seeing more and more multigenerational homes. This show taps into that. You have a single man living with his father. Also due to economic down turn you have a father living with a married couple. This was a pilot done right. I have high hopes for this as we move forward.
The writing and acting on Dads is phenomenal. The cast has not quite yet come together but should get there with no problems. These are classic jokes and yet you do not see them coming. The show is back to basics. Set up transition punch line commercial. What more do you need from a half hour comedy.
Giovanni Ribisi, Warner, lives with his wife, or girlfriend they were not clear on which, and his father, played superbly by Martin Mull. His father has recently lost the family fortune and is now residing with his son; much to the daughter in-laws unhappiness. Warner and his father avoid confrontation at any and all cost, sound familiar? (If not hang in there) Mull’s character seems to be kind-hearted and family oriented, even though he has not kept up with political correctness.
Eli, Seth green, is a single man on the prowl. He is a software designer /game developer and plays it just like we all would, endless summer. The pilot revolves around a surprise party given in honor of Eli. His father, Peter Riegert, has been invited for a multi-day stay; this is in retaliation for an Indian food burp bestowed upon Warner. By the end of the episode Eli learns that his father has lost everything in the economic down turn and, to his own amazement, invites his dad to stay with him.
This is put together as a classic pilot should be. We know who our main characters are, Warner and Eli. We know who our secondaries are, the dads.
We get to see interaction between all characters. There is a scene with each talking to their fathers. There is a scene with the two fathers talking. There is even a scene with all the cast together. This is classic 1970’s work place humor. I hope they do not forget this and try to shift to family. It’s not family it is work place. That is where the comedy will be for this show. Yes family is a part of it but it is only a side dish not the meal.
There is really no end to the shows possibilities. Right now we have a young game firm putting out a sequel to its popular title kill Hitler. And what is the sequel? “Kill Hitler 2! and like a line in the show “seems like people really like to kill Hitler.”. It does not end here. We can various business ventures that can change things up and move them around. I predict by season three these guys will have their own firm and the dads, somehow, will be working there too. Everyone will learn from everyone else about life in business as comedy ensues.
