As I have been writing this blog over the last few weeks I keep coming back to my childhood. I am now wondering why there aren’t more remakes of classic TV shows into movies. I know they have been hit or miss with Dukes of Hazard and Starsky and Hutch not taking the source material serious enough, and let’s face it Charlie’s Angels may have taken it too serious. I am still not sure where I stand on 21 Jump Street. The movie was a laugh riot but was so far removed from the source that I think fans of the show probably did not feel like it was authentic enough. That being said here the top five shows I would like to see turned into movies.
5. Bosom Buddies. This was a funny show back in the early eighties. I laughed all the way through this, probably was too young to understand most of the jokes but I still laughed. The premise of the show is two friends are looking for a cheap place to live in New York. They find an apartment building that caters to only to women. So what do they do? What any logical apartment hunter would do they decide to dress up as women and live in the cheap apartment while they work in advertising. Just a side note why did so many shows have people who worked in advertising? Anyway, I think this could be funny in today’s society. I think we could really see humor on a couple of guys down on their luck looking for housing amidst this down economy. Not to mention we could throw in the romance between one of the guys and a lady living in the apartment complex, and maybe even have one of the guys find he enjoys living as a women and start working in a drag show or something. Just really spit balling here but if you add that I want credit, and a paycheck.
4. Airwolf. I know this one has appeared on a couple of lists but I love this show, or at least I did. A super helicopter and a team uncovering government conspiracies and solving crimes, what’s not to love. I think this would do wonderful in a movie format. High action huge stunts serious drama and global interactions. We could see a real back story build here. We can discover why these characters are all together and what drives them. I know there was a story arc of one character looking for his brother think this would be a great through story. Throw in a couple of missions, perhaps a drug incursion in a jungle a terrorist training camp in the desert, and an urban gang in the U.S. this would be simply high action and I think Michael Bay should jump on this as quickly as possible.
3. Quantum Leap. I started going back through this show with my daughter not too long ago and then realized it was a real commitment the second time through, however a nice movie could be fun. Take the origin story for act one, maybe a brief leap to show the Swiss cheese brain thin for act two, then a major historical event as a backdrop for a third world changing, without realizing it, third act. I think that this could be the next big movie franchise. Get the right stars, Ben Affleck as Sam and maybe Steve Buscemi as Al just a thought, combine that with trippy special effects maybe a cameo by Steve Hawking or Neil deGrasse Tyson, I think we could have a hit. It would definitely be a sci-fi drama with a pinch of action. Another summer hit, if done right maybe even an Oscar who knows? Well other than Sam and Al.
2. The Greatest American Hero. How has this not yet been turned into a film?!?! I mean seriously a high school history teacher and an F.B.I. agent meet aliens in the desert and receive a super suit. The catch? They lose the instructions. This is a buddy comedy like no other. The show itself was OK back in the 80’s I think only 3 seasons or so which is fine because really how long does it take to learn to use a suit? You got humorous attempts to fly and land and the discovery of each of the powers is he bullet proof, does he now have super strength because of the suit, does he have X-ray vision, one movie would answer most of these questions. Pair the right dramatic actor for the agent, Bryan Cranston or Sam Rockwell, paired with the right young actor for the teacher, James Franco or even Jason Siegel, and I think this thing writes directs and produces itself.
1. Tales of the Gold Monkey. I do not know how long this was on. I only saw a handful of episodes when it aired. I think this is probably the best one on here, obviously its number 1. The story revolves around a cargo pilot flying in the pacific who also does island tours. There is the hunt for treasure and basic sightseeing. The island base has a hotel and a bar that our pilot works out of. It is set in the late forties I think, which would work out good for our movie. Life was simple in those days. I think the island hopping adventure could be fun. Let’s face it Indiana Jones has found just about as great of artifacts as you could find. Here we could do a treasure story with a nefarious group working to steal the treasure. Maybe even run into a Japanese soldier who doesn’t know the war is over yet. There are really so many directions this could go that I think it would be great.
These are my top five TV shows that should be movies. Did I miss one you would like to see? Let me know in the comments. As always don’t forget to vote for your favorite.
