I have noticed lately that a lot of new TV shows seem to be based on movies. I am not seeing the right ones. Dracula, I know it was book first but this is America who reads, came and went, I am hearing a lot of good stuff about Hannibal, and how the hell is Psycho a show? Even Fargo and Dusk till dawn are shows and those just don’t seem like possibilities to me. I was thinking what movies did I actually think would make good TV shows. These are five movies I though as soon as they were over would be better as TV shows.
5. Men In Black. This cries out for a serial working. I think we would benefit from a dark hour long crime comedy show. Plenty of conspiracies to work from and as per Tommy Lee Jones’s line form the first movie “the world is always about to end” there is obviously a lot to work with. This could really be a Barney Miller meets X files kind of cross over. Sure there are serious threats to our world and our existence. Of course there is a secret government agency designed to cover up/ explain these things away. Why not follow the simple formula from the movie. We place a new recruit with a veteran agent. The new recruit has stumbled into this world, how else do you become an MIB? We get to see the heavy stuff and the light stuff. Aliens trying to destroy the planet would work every couple of episodes, but what about all those UFO encounters the history channel keeps trying to sell us. Those could also provide a little light humor as well. Who wouldn’t want to see a scene where an alien creature resembling Bigfoot is reminded of the boundaries he is supposed to stay inside of? I really think this could work, somebody get me Joss Whedon on the phone right now.
4. Sneakers. Here is a spy movie from the nineties that really seemed to fly under the radar. We have essentially a computer security firm who makes a living by defeating security systems and informing clients of where there are weaknesses. This one, to me, seems straight forward every week a new client every week a new mystery. It’s a classic plot from as far back as Perry Mason. They get a job that then turns out to be a mystery to be solved, oh yeah and the security gets tightened up too. Of course there is room for the femme-fatale who wants to exploit the team to expose her married lover, a government agency that is running dark ops on U.S. soil, and of course straight up crime. This is a winner, we may just have to wait for the next writers’ strike to see it but I think it has got gold all over it.
3. Dredd. Who doesn’t love a good cop show? This would be one set in a future where all of our current problems are intensified. All of our criminal and social problems could simply be amplified from here and set out in an almost ridiculous way in the future to allow for such extreme measures. I am surprised that we are not already seeing judges roaming the street to speed up the process of the legal system. I am sure many Americans would be ok with it as it would make them “feel” safer in their own towns or homes. We are already willingly giving up so many of our rights that this really is not that far off. Plus it works as a comic book so why not take the episodic value and put it on TV? I am looking at you FOX. This could violent, sexy, and social commentary. The writing would have to be smart for this to really work.
2. Wanted. Who does not love a dark conspiracy to help make sense of the senseless violence in our world. Turn on the television and all you see on the news is really just violence. Why not take a small group of international assassins and let them make the world better through killing. As long as we stayed with the moral grey area I think most people would accept this show. Killing one to save thousands is almost our national motto. Highly stylized and quick paced this could be a huge hit. I really think there is room for this on our dial, even if it gets put on AMC in the summer with a short season. I think people would love this.
1. Jumper. First of all let me say I love this super power. Think of it and poof you are there. I hate traffic. I really don’t even like dealing with people. This is perfect for me. Poof I am in the movie theater no lines no hassles no paying. Poof I am at the store getting my new game, of course it is at night so I can grab and go without paying. It would definitely make my life cheaper. I may be a little off topic here. Let’s think of how this could work. The set up in the movie was excellent. You have jumpers and paladins. We take a jumper searching for answers and let him roam the country side helping to right the wrongs of the world, like Kung Fu. This would definitely be one of those long play series. It would need a three year deal to find the audience. I think with time we would all come to watch this wonderful series, hey Netflix I got your next hit.
Those are my top five movies that should be television shows. Did I miss one you like? Let me know in the comments. As always vote for your favorite in the poll.
