You watch these shows week after week and by the end of the series you end up doing jury duty. You are so invested that you have no choice but to stick it out. Or you watch a show and wonder why are they doing this like that? Here are five shows, four cancelled one still airing, that I know I can fix if given a chance.
5. Continuum. I loved the first season of this show. What’s not to like; you got time travel evil corporations and even some personal conflict worked. The first season nailed it. The second season was not as good but hey they knew they had an entire season to build to a specific event with. The third season…well I still have five episodes to watch. The problem is this show has lost sight of what it is, Anti-corporate greed being defended and torn down. Now what we have is a mish mosh of time travel and crime that may or may not exist; futures that depend upon time travelers returning to the past. They need to return to the simple terrorist protecting our future from ourselves. The commentary on reactionary government stealing power away from people and placing it in the hands of corporations is the heart of this show. This is a cautionary tale of where we currently stand and an exactly how bad it can get. We need to see Kira’s struggle with her future but at the same time trying to preserve her life in it. We need to see Carlos’s eyes being opened as well as Alek’s new understanding of what role he will ultimately play in this future. Keep it simple and stick with the vision from season one.
The Fix: it’s time travel you can always go back to a point before things went wrong and reset. I believe you can only do this once or twice before the audience gives up but you can at least wipe out the bad choice, like season three, and return to proper course.
4. Sliders. I loved this show when it was on then they changed the entire cast over a season and they lost me. Sure I understand adding in younger actors to bring in a younger demographic and adding sex appeal but this show dropped substance for style. The concept is simple; it’s not time travel but dimensional travel. This provides seemingly endless possibilities with storytelling. This is a tour of what could be in our world. The constant shift of simple little things to make our sliders unaware of where they are or what can happen. You can halt social or physical evolution at any point to tell the story.
The Fix: there was an episode where the sliders were held captive by the cromags. The cromags tortured them by showing them realities that could be. Simply back up to that point and then move forward form there. Of course we may now have to recast but that can be done with the bewitched principal. Just do it and act like nothing changed. We didn’t complain about different Darrens why would we complain about new sliders.
3. Flashforward. This was a good show. It was solid in sci-fi, conspiracy, and drama. The show revolves around several storylines all driven by an event, the flashforward. People, for an unknown reason, saw several months into the future. What did they see? Just a couple of minutes. What did it mean? No one knows. It got cancelled before we made real progress here. My major issue with this show, like game of thrones, too many storylines to follow. You would be several episodes down the road then have toback track to get caught up with the next group.
The fix: Again we may have to recast but again I suggest the bewitched model otherwise it becomes a reboot. Surely we can get most of the original cast back in play for this. We need to also trim down the story lines. Simplify to three major areas. Area one the FBI investigating what happened. This also leads into simply crime motivated by the flash as well. Story line two the hospital. This always provides drama, plus marry an agent to a dr. and you can now seamlessly get storyline three. The third storyline, how does one family deal with this event. This brings in kids of tow ages and their school friends and interactions. In a time when they most need their family their family is most needed dealing with fallout from the flash. Real simple fix.
2. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. This show was a no brainer. Action drama on television does well when it can find an audience and I believe the time is now ripe for this audience when it was not ready a few years back. The show, if you can’t figure it out from the title, was about the story of Sarah Connor raising the leader of the human race against the machines. Simple action drama to follow forward until judgment day itself arrives. The writing was good the action was good the acting was good. There are very few complaints I have about this show. I would have held off on revealing the liquid or t-1000 models until later but ok. This show had two seasons and began during a writers strike. This show could have really been on for years if it had been managed correctly.
The fix: again time travel fixes everything. Where we left off on this show was in the future, post judgement day. John, with the help of liquid metal, had jumped into the future. This was a perfect set up. The fourth movie was about to come out and it took place in this future. Why not have this whining teenager who was all but fed up with being some great eventual hero see the importance of what he is fighting for. Then he can be sent back to the present to continue on with his mom. You can even send him a few years later to create the drama. He can come back with his uncle Derrek and fix one of the show’s most unnecessary deaths. I really think we could be ready for this now.
1. Jericho. My Favorite show of the last decade. I would sacrifice almost any of the current shows I love to turn back the hands of time and bring back to life this wonderful series. Again it starts during a writers strike and has nothing but trouble from there on in. this show focusses on a small town surviving in the wake of a crippling terrorist attack. Someone, some group rather, has set off over forty dirty bombs/nuclear devices in major cities across the country. This cuts off the small town of Jericho Kansas form the rest of the nation and the world. They must learn to survive with each other and get back to basics if they are going to come out of this alive. The show was plagued with a large cast and therefore a budget issue to begin with. So I do understand the need for the war with the neighboring town to thin out the cast. They also jumped way ahead in the progression to manufacture drama and intrigue. When we left off there was about to be a standoff with the sovereign nation of Texas and the establishment of a new American government. The stakes were high and everybody was on edge. This was a stressful show to watch but that is where the fun was.
The Fix: simply pick up where we left off. Recast who you have too and bring this back right now today. This show was a victim of timing not anything else. I think we could see ourselves surviving our recent economic downturn and coming through better and stronger. I think we are ready to see the need, sometimes, for an insurgent force challenging an invading military regardless of their intent. I think Jericho wins hearts minds and viewers if it comes back, I know it’s got no shot but I would love it!
Those are five shows I think I could fix. Did I miss one you liked? Let me know in the comments and as always don’t forget to vote.
