Fall is in the air! NBC’s new fall shows

NBCUniversal Logos

The new fall season is upon us and what am I watching? Well NBC has a few new shows that look interesting to me. In no particular order here they:

Mr.-RobinsonMr. Robinson: this is a Half hour comedy starring Craig Robinson (The Office US) and Jean Smart (Designing Women). To me this looks like a cross between Kids say the Darndest things and School of Rock. I am not overly excited for this show but as I am in need of something light and comical I am in. I love Craig Robinson . He was hilarious on The Office and even funnier in Hot Tub Time Machine. I even liked him This is the End. Can he carry a half hour show on his own? Will he be over shadowed by the kids? Will this show last the season, or maybe more? I sure hope so I would like to see a funny classroom comedy and I think this might work.

bad judgeBad Judge: this is also another half hour comedy. Looks like an attempt to retread the failed series, and movie, bad teacher. As a teacher myself I was not pleased with either of these presentations. I understand none of us want our profession with word bad in front of it. We all know people who are bad at their jobs and give everyone else in the profession a bad name. That being said this looks funny. Really should be just titled Bad Grown Up, but I will let that slide. Again I am hurting for comedies so I am willing to give this a try. I am hoping it is more irreverent at our society as a whole and does not get schmaltzy. This could provide us with an incredibly realistic look at how we have damaged our society beyond repair with our over active sense of fairness, as long as that fairness goes in my favor. This stars Kate Walsh (Grey’s Anatomy) as a judge who seems to want her profession and her personal life. The two seem to become intertwined and hard to pull apart. Again most of the funny I am seeing in the commercials seem to revolve around things one should not say around children. I hope this does not spiral into cute kids who are entitled. I got my fingers crossed, but I am not holding my breath.

constantineConstantine: this is an adaptation from a comic book that was made into an alright movie. This looks dark and will air, at last check, after Grimm. This could be a Friday night sleeper hit. I am excited to see this dark dreary brooding look at evil in our world. I am hoping that NBC pulls no punches and pushes the limits as to what the FCC will allow. That’s not to say I want full on gore and violence but serious chills and dark thrills. The show seems to be a new take on the wandering do gooder, think Kung Fu with magic. He is a demon hunter whose soul is condemned to hell but continues to fight the good fight for the righteous and good. Can he save the world and his soul? Tune on Fridays to find out.

lauraThe Mysteries of Laura: Debra Messing (Will and Grace) is a single mom and a NY detective. This show looks to be smart and witty as well as a simple cop procedural, think Will and Grace meets NYPD Blue. I am hoping that this works. It really can, based off of what I have seen. My biggest concern is will the writing hold up? a few of the clips I have seen seems to suggest that the same quick wit of Will and Grace is here. I am also wondering if they will be able to walk the line between cop drama and family drama. There has to be a balance. Blue Bloods does this well, if the premise of an entire cop family from commissioner to patrol is farfetched. I will be giving this my three episode try before deciding.

affairsState of Affairs: I am not too hopeful for this. It appears the show will be focusing on the president’s daily briefing and prioritization of the threats presented to the office, and the nation. It could, and should, be interesting. Problem is most people do not want to see the behind the scenes look at prioritization of a briefing. A few years, like six or eight now, ago a show called E-ring focused on the office of the secretary of defense and the inner workings at the pentagon. I liked it but for the little action it had it felt more like I had meetings at the pentagon after my day at work. I am probably wrong in thinking this will not make it far; it won’t be the first time and won’t be the last time for that. The show is written and directed by Joe Carnahan (the blacklist) so there is a distinct possibility this could be another big hit. I am going to wait on this show and if it takes off after a couple of seasons I will catch up in binge viewing and try to get on board for the last few seasons.

This is all I am currently seeing from NBC that seems worth a try for new shows. Really slim pickings for a major network, but they do have several returning shows to round out their programming. Many of the returning shows I am excited for and will cover in another post. Did I miss a new NBC show you think will be good? Let me know in the comments. As always don’t forget to vote for your favorite in the poll.
