You Got This, an exploration of Competence Porn

I wanted to talk a little bit about being good at what you do. Through the trials and tribulations of the past couple of years it feels as if we have all taken a big hit in what we know to be true and what everyone else is doing. Many are fighting it and trying to maintain their highest levels of functioning, but I fear we are all falling a little short on this. So today, I thought I would talk about shows that fit the competence porn category. Now what is competence porn? This is a genre of shows and movies where people are actually good at their jobs and trying their best to continue to be good, if not the best possible, at what they do. I know I have been re-watching these shows nonstop to try to grasp to a little bit of life before the pandemic. It is hard to continue this grind, whether working from home or back at the office, when we see so many who seem to not take any of this seriously. Therefore, I have thrown myself headlong into watching shows where the cast seems united to work for a common goal, and everyone involved is seeking to be the best, even if it is not their idea, and complete the task.

First up is a great show with excellent writing and a wonderful cast. I am talking about HOUSE. I did not watch this when it was on the air initially and a friend recently, like a few months ago, recommended this to me. This is not your typical medical drama. At the top is the main character, Dr. House played by Hugh Laurie, he was on Veep for several episodes as well as Catch 22 and I think my favorite the episode of friend’s where Rachel goes to ruin Ross’s wedding. He is the classic curmudgeon. He knows a lot about a lot. The level of what he knows is beyond that of any other doctor on television. This power does make him a little hard to be around. So headstrong and right, more often than not, he is right even when he is wrong it turns out he was right.  His team, in the early seasons, consists of three doctors. All have chosen to work with House as he is the best but, House does abuse them. He does this with the intent of making them better than they are. First up is Omar Epps as Dr. Foreman. I will watch Omar Epps in just about anything. He is a wonderful actor and plays this role perfectly. He is, essentially, house in training. His past is alluded to but nothing real is revealed. For a short time, we meet Foreman’s brother but that is only a couple of episodes and then he is gone. The brother is played by Orlando Jones. You know him from a ton of stuff. He was on Sleepy Hollow, Mad tv, as well as a different world and office space. He is wonderful but like I said if you blink you will miss him. Foreman is not quite House yet but is definitely working on it. His cold reliance on only the science and the medical seems to drive him. Dr. Cameron played by Jennifer Morrison, is the anti-house. She was on Once Upon a Time, How I Met Your Mother, and This Is Us. Dr. Cameron is all about the feels. She is the emotions that House sorely does not seem to display. She is the one at the bedside with the sick patient, while house typically does not even see the patient. She is the heart of the team. This brings us to Dr. Chase, played by Jesse Spencer. You will remember him from the Chicago Shows, pd fire and med, he was also in uptown girls as well as an episode of Phineas and Ferb. This former seminary student has now turned to medicine. He is bit of a punching bag as a character for House, and foreman. However, he does not stop. He is driven to succeed but will be aware of the cost. He has lines he will not cross but for the most part, if House says to do it, he does it. I always like to pick a character on a show that I think would be me in the show. Now I know I got no business being a doctor or even playing a doctor, but in this instance, I believe Dr. Chase represents us, the viewer, on the show. Most of us are not the go-getters who will argue the point. Most of us will say what we think and move on when overruled. This seems to be where Dr. Chase, the character, is for me. I am sure with each of the characters there is a position for everyone. Dr. Wilson, played by Robert Sean Leonard, is an old friend of house and comes in for the occasional consult. You will know him from Dead Poet’s Society, Swing Kids, and Falling Skies. He is the outsider and since he is a friend of House he gets to point out, rather bluntly, where House may be wrong or just an emotionless robot. Some of the banter with Dr. Wilson and the other characters is very good.

Dr. Cuddy Played by Lisa Edelstein is really the head of the entire hospital. You know her from 911 Lonestar as well as The West Wing, and Ally McBeal. Cuddy is the big boss who has to, somehow, deal with all these personalities and run the entire hospital. She manages to balance it all and is quite good at her job here. Midway through the run we need new interns for House to abuse and we get a good crew. Kal Penn, Harold and Kumar movies is what pops for him but also How I Met Your Mother and Clarice, an attempt to make a series set in the nineties about Silence of the lambs. He is excellent in this role, for a short time, and has probably one of the best exits ever. Olivia Wilde shows up for a few seasons as well. You will know her from Vinyl, great series about the music industry in the seventies, as well as Tron Legacy and the O.C. She is wonderful here. A great foil for House to spar with from time to time. We also Get Dr. Taub played by Peter Jacobson. You are going to know him from Fear the Walking Dead, the Colony and The Americans. I love the Americans. If you like the eighties and well-paced spy thrillers, then I cannot recommend the Americans enough. Dr. Taub is the guy in the office who seems to have it all figured out. Now I don’t mean he is on top of things I mean he seems to understand how this all works. He plays this all the way through even when he gets caught up in a case, he still reverts back to this sort of laid-back posture.

For competence porn, this show is excellent. Everyone on here is top of their field. They would each be able to be their own medical drama without House. It works so well because they all know so much but are also willing to listen to each other even when they do not agree. I really wish more of my workplace were like this. Passionate exchanges from knowledgeable people. Always finding the solve even if it is not the best possible outcome. I am glad my day job does not seem to have such life-or-death consequences. If you want to check out House, you can find it at Peacock

Next up I would like to talk a little bit about The West Wing. This show is AWESOME! If you have not seen it, you need to. The show centers on a fictional president, the Bartlett administration, and how they navigate the political battlefield and lead the nation. I was so sure that NBC was going to get a president elected when this was on. Martin Sheen’s President Bartlett is the embodiment of what we want, or rather need, in a president. the perfect ideal that never will be met but we should strive for this as a rule. He is funny, knowledgeable, and sometimes he is even in charge. He is what a president should be. Smart enough, a Nobel Prize winner in economics, to know he needs to surround himself with even smarter people. You will know Martin Sheen from, well the various projects you have seen him in. We all have our favorites for Martin Sheen. Yes, he was in Apocalypse Now, Dead Zone, Cadence, and The Believers. I am sure you have three or five that you like him in. This entire cast is made up of really smart characters.

Leo McGarry, played by John Spencer, is the best chief of staff I have ever seen. You know John Spencer from L.A. Law, the movie Copland, and of course he has a Law-and-Order credit, he was on the first episode. Somehow Leo McGarry is able to let these smart people do the outlandish crazy ideas but still bring them back to reality. He is not their friend, usually, he is their boss. He keeps that line even when he is being friendly the line is clear. This is not to say he does not care because he does, he just maintains the line of work and friendship. In a job like this that has to be difficult at times. They all work thirty hours a day it would seem. I am glad I do not have a job where I am required to keep a closet at work.

Toby Ziegler is the head speech writer. Toby is played by Richard Schiff who you will know from Ballers, Counterpart, and the Hudsucker Proxy. A wealth of knowledge for a writer, about life in general but also about writing. I got to imagine that as a writer writing for a character who is a writer is difficult to do. Richard Schiff is spot on in this role. You can see that tortured writer in him, but it only drives him to be better at every turn. Toby is our realist here. Yes, everything is a bit of a dark cloud with him, but he usually pushes through to the correct answer, even if he sometimes takes the long road.

The second in command, behind Leo that is, is Josh Lyman played by Bradley Whitford. You Know Bradley Whitford from Get Out, Cabin in the Woods, and Perfect Harmony. Josh Lyman is the rock star of the west wing. This guy knows everything from parliamentary procedure to the history of the office of the president. He is a walking encyclopedia. I really wish I felt like that at my job. The confidence and headstrong character that could only be played by Bradly Whitford.

Rob Lowe plays the second speech writer working under Toby. I love Rob Lowe. I always have. You know him from Lonestar 911 as well as Oxford Blues, Parks and Rec, Youngblood and of course all those brat pack films like St. Elmo’s Fire and such. Sam Seaborn has no business in politics. We do get to see how he left working as a soulless corporate lawyer, which he also should not do, to working for President Bartlett. He has nothing but heart. You can tell this character wants so badly to make the world a better place. I would say let’s reboot The West Wing and center around President Seaborn. Allison Janey’s CJ Craig is the press secretary we all want. You know Allison Janey from Mom, Phineas and Ferb, I loved that show I will always use that credit, and 10 things I hate about you. C.J. is able to run the briefing room with all the reporters as well as handling issues within the staff. She is tough and strong, not mention a little freighting as well.

This whole cast are really good at their jobs. Not too many mistakes made by this group, and when they are made, we, the audience, are shocked that it did not work. With a group like this at your back you very well could rule the world. The west wing is currently available for streaming at HBO MAX.

the idea of competence porn seems to best fit with Science Fiction. This probably where most of us encounter this idea at first. There was a show on Sci-Fi channel called Eureka that fits her perfectly. Eureka was a fictional town founded by Einstein and others shortly after WWII. The idea was to create a place where scientist could explore the limits of the universe and discovery. This show is wonderful in that it is a monster of the week thing. There is a bit of through story in the later seasons, however they do tend to stick to the format of monster, or crisis, of the week. The town has also paired with global Dynamics. They are a corporation who manages most of the town’s research as a defense contractor. They are able to sell some of the discoveries and others go straight to the military.

At Global we have Allyson Blake as the DOD liaison. She is played by Sally Richardson-Whitfield. You will know her from Anaconda Search for the Blood Orchid, Stitchers, and the animated series Gargoyles. A medical doctor and scientist in her right however now more of a bureaucrat than scientist. She does her best to keep the high-profile military visitors away from the chaos that is occurring almost nonstop each week.

The head of Global is Nathan Stark played by Ed Quin who you will know from Two Broke Girls, the One Day at a Time reboot, and CSI: NY. Think Tony Stark but more of a stuffed shirt. He is what is wrong with highly intelligent people. He has no patience for anyone who is not at his level. Constantly reminding the Sherriff that he is more intelligent than him, and of course rubbing in his face in a way that the sheriff does not comprehend most times. Henry Deacon, former NASA Astronaut, physicist, and all jack of all trades. Deacon is portrayed by Joe Morton who I just absolutely love seeing on screen. For me his credits go all the way back to a little film starring Ralph Macchio called Crossroads, but you may remember him in terminator 2 judgement day, a different world and a recurring role on Law and Order. Henry does several jobs around Eureka and has the Velcro patches for his jump suit to prove. I always loved this little gag and I think they drop it mid-season 2. Henry wears is mechanics jump suit and then makes a point of changing the job title from mechanic to coroner, to whatever. Always made me chuckle.

Of course, we cannot forget Fargo. If I were a scientist this would definitely be me. The man cannot resist pushing a button if he sees one. Fargo is played by Niel Grayston who you know from Edgemont, Wonderfalls and I think he may have done an episode of Dead Like Me also. This is usually what sets of the crisis of the week more often than not.

Sherriff Carter, Colin Ferguson, is pulled from his job as a U.S. Marshal and assigned as sheriff in Eureka with his daughter. You know Collin Ferguson from Vampire Diaries, Haven, and Coupling. Sheriff Carter is your average everyman. In a town filled with formally educated people Carter is the one with the most real-world type of knowledge. Not to give anything away here but most of these issues are solved because Carter thinks to unplug the infernal machine or risks his life to try and turn off the machine. Zoe is the sheriff’s daughter and the best character growth of anyone on the show. Zoe is played by Jordan Danger, I thought was her middle name. you know her from a Very Harold and Kumar Christmas and Kevin from Work. Of course, she moves to this town and instantly begins to thrive. Seriously who would not thrive in a town full of geniuses?

Everybody in this town is a top-notch scientist. Even Vincent who runs Café’ Diem. He is a master chef with PhD in food sciences. Vincent is played by Chris Gauthier who you remember from Freddy v. Jason as well as Once upon a time, and Harper’s Island. Such a kind character and one of my favorites. We also get Zane Donovan, portrayed by Niall Matter. You know him from Primeval: New World and the Best Years. He comes in as the cocky hacker type but soon settles into the town and its vibe.

The way the show works is some Scientist creates a thing it goes bad. We see a few scenes of Henry explain the science to Carter and then we get to the ultimate conclusion. Each week the scientist cannot figure out how to fix the issue and Carter ends up just pulling the plug, well not just but pretty close. Sheriff Carter is who we are meant to identify with in the show. Everybody here is trying to make the world a better place through science and technology. They will entertain the outlandish idea and talk through the impossible science needed to solve the issue and then low and behold they figure out a way that “Might just work.” This show is a warm hug, a welcome home. Always so positive, even when the stories get a little dark it is able to find the light. Usually, a well-meaning but overzealous scientist has produced a way to fix everything, but it goes wrong, every week. I mean how does anyone have insurance in this town. A great show and you should check it out. You can find Eureka on Peacock.

Marvels agents of SHIELD is another notable example here. With as hot as Marvel is these days, I am fairly sure most fans have checked this out on Disney plus, if they did not watch it when it aired. SPOILER ALERT!!!

Turns out Agent Coulson survived the attack by Loki from the first Avengers movie and is now working secretly with his own team within shield. Clark Greg is Phil Coulson, and no one else can play this role. Aside from playing agent Coulson through out the marvel verse he was also on New Adventures of Old Christine, he did several episodes of The West Wing, and of course he also has a Law-and-Order Credit, and really at this point who does not have a law-and-order credit. Phil Coulson is the leader of our merry band and does an excellent job. Always out front making the hard calls as well as playing counselor to many of our other characters. He is a leader through and through. He is also an expert on SHIELD history, all the way back to the old SSR days with Agent Peggy Carter. He has an almost savant like knowledge in this area. I am sure that through all the years of working in the field has also given him the insight needed to play this four-dimensional chess game that he and his team are often found to be in.

On the team is Agent May, played by the wonderful Ming Na Wen. She is the team dad in contrast to the utility player that agent Coulson is. You know Ming Na Wen from Mulan, Star Wars Book of Boba Fet as well as her voice work on Sophia the first and Phineas and Ferb she was also on Eureka for several episodes as well. May wants no excuses. Yes, you can screw up, I mean it is how we learn, but she only wants you back at it.  if you hit the mat the next move had better be getting up. Late in the run there is a scene with Agent May training some recruits. One of the recruits taps out may addresses the rest of the crew and asks, “what was his mistake?” to which Piper responds “He Tapped out” may smiles at her and we move on. Piper will be a figure late in the series and her. Like most of the cast, is absolutely wonderful

Along with her is Grant Ward played by Brett Dalton. Another operative like May. This is his first team. Usually, he works alone but now has to be part of the team. This character runs deep. He is loyal to his mission, whatever that may be. Now he does go through some things in the first few seasons, and I really do not want to give anything away here. Suffice it to say Grant Ward appears to be a true believer, maybe one day he will have his team like Coulson does, but that day is not today. Young, headstrong and ready to make the mistakes of youth, Grant Ward is at that point in his career, or rather his life, where it is time to step up and do something. Where do you know Brett Dalton from? I will be honest I only know him from this but looking over his IMDB page we see he has been in Chicago fire; he did some voice work for the game Until Dawn, I liked the concept of this game an interactive movie really. Such a talented actor his performance throughout the series really makes it worth the watch. He is a puzzle piece that seems to fit exactly where it is needed.

Fitz Simmons is treated as a single character even though it is actually two people. Elizabeth Henstridge plays Simmons and Iain De Caestecker plays Fitz. The two are inseparable and work well with each other. They finish each other’s sentences and solve just about anything you throw at them. They are our science team. Fitz is mechanical while Simmons is more biological; with this paring there is absolutely no problem that they can’t solve. With enough time they could even solve time travel, I am sure of it. you know both of these actors from this but also Iain has been in Overlord, coronation Street, and voice work in Assassin’s Creed III. I absolutely love the character of Fitz, so relatable, so enthusiastic, and all about the science. There is no problem he does not want to at least attempt to solve. Elizabeth Henstridge, you know from this mostly she is also on Suspicion and looks like she does more behind the scenes than in front of the camera. She is a female version of Fitz, and they work so well together. Their on-screen chemistry is absolutely wonderful.

By the end of the pilot, we add in Sky. She is a member of the Rising Tide, the least threatening name of a tech terror group, and she is converted over to shield. Chloe Bennet nails this part through and through. I honestly think we are meant to identify with her as the character that is the viewer. She is coming to terms with joining the group she has been fighting against. You know Chloe Bennet from a few episodes of Nashville and Valley Girl.

In season two we get a few new team members that show up. Alphonso Mack Mackenzie played by Henry Simmons is a great addition. Big Mechanic who does not like violence. the irony of the beast who could cut through anyone like a warm knife through melted butter, but this is the one power he does not want to use. I saw him first in the last few seasons of NYPD Blue as well as Shark, and a couple of episodes of New York Undercover.

We also get Bobby and Hunter the on again off again couple who just need to be together already. I honestly thought these two were going to get a spin off. Bobby is played by Adrienne Palicki, Friday night lights the show, G.I. Joe Retaliation and currently on The Orville. She is in it for the long haul. Driven by doing the right thing at the time. Her love interest is Hunter, played by Nick Blood. With a name like that how is he not a superhero or at least a mercenary with a heart of gold? Of course, that is what he plays here. He is a mercenary who will do what he can for his team and those closest to him. He loves Bobby with all his hear and wants nothing more than to be with her. She will be with him forever as long as they do not name it. these two works well together and I would love to see more adventures with them.

We also get some Inhumans in the mix in subsequent seasons. One that stands out is YO-YO played be Natalia Cordova-Buckley who you may have seen in Mayans MC, voice work in Coco, and MacFarland USA. She has a superpower of super speed but returns to her start point. So yes, she can run really far really face, like a blink, but always ends up back where she started. A wonderful character who the team brings because of how devoted she is to do the right thing.

Season one takes a lot of heat for not being that good. I will tell you it is excellent. When the show started, they made a big deal of it being separate from the MCU, which was a mistake. This show is firing on all cylinders as we link it to the wider MCU. By the end of season one we are dealing with the effects of Captain America the Winter Soldier on the team, and universe at large. This continues on through out the run of the series. Every character here has their role to play, and they nail it. each one of these characters are experts in their field and this show goes out of its way to show this as much as possible. Its not filler or tacked on, it feels very organic and crucial to the story. you delve into their lives in show that could so easily devolve into the monster of the week episodes combined with ads for Marvel Movies. I feel like I am always in the midst of a re-watch, and I always feel like I am fining new information with each watch. My most recent watch, now that it is available on Disney plus, is really showing me just how cultish this group is. Their devotion to SHIELD, the Mission, and then the group all above the individual person does raise some red flags for me; however, during the pandemic, which yes is still happening, this show really did make me feel a part of something. Belonging is what Agents of Shield Brings and each member of the group needs to belong to the team for their own reasons. Each bringing their skill set to the table to create a true work family. If you have not yet seen this, please take the time and check it out on Disney Plus.

For me when I first heard the term “Competence Porn” this is exactly the show I thought of. I am talking about star trek. Which trek you ask? Why all of them of course. Star trek is very personal to each of us. We all have our own trek, and we seem to tolerate the rest. I would even go so far as to say we each even have our trek we like and do not talk about. I am looking at you adult Prodigy fans without kids. I mean yes Prodigy is aimed at the younger kids among us, but it is still trek at its core. For me, and this will be a shock, I am going to focus on Next Gen. This is really mostly where Gen X found Star Trek. I know when I was younger, I always enjoyed when the original series was on, but it seemed to always be some sort of a surprise to me. By the time Next gen rolled around I was aware of scheduling and such so I was able to dive right in. for those who don’t know, and really how could you not know at this point, star trek is essentially us traveling the stars and helping where we can. I mean truly that is all trek every has been. We traverse the stars and explore, scratching our itch to find out what else is out there, all while providing help to others along the way. Great sci-fi holds that mirror up to us and forces us to look at ourselves through that lens. Always has been always will be. Star Trek holds to that more than most sci-fi shows do.

let’s start with our crew. First off, the major difference here from the original series is we have a child on board. Wesley Crusher played by Wil Wheaton is an excellent add to the cast. For me I saw this and said, “yes there I am”. This was probably the first time I looked at show and saw myself in there. This provides an in for the younger audience. You know Wil Wheaton from Stand By Me, Toy Soldiers and of course the many appearances in genre shows like Eureka, and The Guild. My favorite is his appearances on Big Bang Theory. Just wonderful. Wesley Crusher seems to have the answer but either lack the confidence to bring it up or the Experience to know why it won’t work. I am so jealous of Wesley Crusher and being able to grow up in this environment.

His mom is also the Chief Medical Officer Beverly Crusher, played by Gates McFadden. You know Gates from Labyrinth, the Edge of Night, and a short stent on Mad About you as well as Franklin and Bash. She is really like the working mom of the group. Yes, she was there for Wesley, but she also had a duty to the crew as well. We only see her take time for herself in just a handful of episodes, she is usually focused on the crew of the enterprise and their wellbeing.

Worf played by Michael Dorn who was in Chips, Savage Dragon, and is now on DOTA Dragon’s Blood. He plays a Klingon in the federation. I am guessing this had a lot of original series fans up in arms. Through out the original series Klingons were the enemy. I always so them as an allegory for the Russians in the cold war. With the cold war waning it only makes sense to add a Klingon to the bridge crew. I mean the very first tenant of this series in inclusion. Look at the bridge crew for the original series. This choice is just the core of trek if you ask me. He will teach us of the Klingon ways of Honor and Duty. Of all the Klingons I have seen on these shows Worf is the one I can count on to not be duplicitous. He honestly strikes me as the most Honorable of all Klingons. Really does sort of foreshadow our whole society if you ask me.

Geordie LaForge works in engineering. He seems to be at the crossroads for most of our stories for this enterprise. Seems like every week we would get an engineering issue thrown in with our social dilemma as well. Levar Burton is wonderful in this role and is usually wonderful in everything. You know him as Kunta Kinte from roots, also from reading rainbow, and he also has a love boat and fantasy island credits. He has also done a bunch of voice work as well. Geordie is the best at his job. I will put his engineering prowess against any other engineer in Starfleet history. I mean this is how you get on the enterprise right?  You are either the best or one of the best recognizes you are going to be the best.

In probably the most sci-fi thing I have ever seen we get a ships counselor who is also empathic. I mean she senses emotions not actually able to read your mind. This is what I need from a therapist. Marina Sirtis plays this part well. You know here from Death Wish 3 and Wax Works 2. It would have been so easy to just make her a mind reader and then we could always know the answer. With Counselor Trois we get some one who gets a vague sense of things not being right. She does not know what is being hidden only that something is being hidden. I love it. she knows without knowing.

Brent Spiner plays DATA. Data is an android who is striving to become more human. I think this is the character where we learn the most about ourselves. Data can see when we are short of what we are looking to achieve but also sees we keep working towards our ideals. Brent Spiner plays this well. It would be so simple to just play him dead and literal but there are nuances to this character. He is probably the most human character on the show. Through nothing more than his striving to be a better person and to understand humanity puts him ahead of most people. You know Brent Spiner from Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, Outcast and Star Wars Rebels.

Jonathon Frakes as Will Riker is excellent. You can tell Riker is fun loving, nurturing and of course also follows the rules. I love through out the first couple of seasons he is seen as sort picking on DATA but there is always a smirk that lets you know he is actually amazed. I think Riker is one of the few charact4ers that realizes he lives in science fiction. He is the one that will stop and look in awe of where he, and we as a species, are. Always offering the best advice to all. Yes, he advises the captain, but he is also there for the crew. An excellent portrayal of a first officer. He handles business and keeps as much of it as possible off of the captains table, however when it is time to bring it to the captain he does so. Turned down command every time it was offered to him. He took a lot of heat on this but there is value in knowing where you belong and not just mindlessly climbing the ladder.  You know Jonathon Frakes from Falcon Crest, North and South, as well as an episode of literally everything I used to watch. One of my favorites is a little show called Voyagers.

Now for the top Dog we have Captain Picard. Patrick Stewart plays this role to perfection. He is knowledgeable of star fleet, regulations, and how to deal with people. A better captain does not exist. Being a Shakespearean actor, he definitely brings a gravitas to a role that most would simply see as a throw away. He delivers each line with living breathing enthusiasm you just do not see very often on television. Definitely top of his game playing a captain at the top of his game. By the way he is still nailing it all these years later. I love him on the new Picard series as well. Where else do you know Patrick Stewart from? he was on American Dad, the Green Room, and of course as Charles Xavier in the X-Men films.

I was a theater major for a while in college. We were in acting class working on Shakespearean stuff. Some had this set of VHS tapes on breaking down Shakespeare for actors or something. We watched in class and talked about and the whole time I was thinking “that guy looks like the guy from star trek “when I finally said something I learned I was the only one who did not know he was the guy from next gen.

We need these images, even if just for escape, to better understand our own plight. The job you have now may not be providing you with this vibe, but if you watch any of these shows you can escape the reality for a moment and at least think I wish my world was more like that.

There are five shows that seem to be excellent examples of Competence porn if I do say so myself.
